Small but useful hygiene habits for eye makeup

Keep personal eye products personal

Avoid sharing mascara and other eye cosmetics. Do not alter a product by adding water or saliva, and follow storage and use directions. Keep applicators clean and avoid contact with dirty surfaces. If a product causes discomfort, do not apply more to improve its appearance. Share the concern and product information with the appropriate healthcare professional rather than treating irritation as an ordinary part of makeup use.

Make hygiene part of the appointment discussion

Ask how products and tools for brow or lash care are prepared. Single-use items should not be reused, and shared product handling needs appropriate hygiene. Active redness, discharge or suspected eye infection calls for health assessment before a cosmetic appointment. Postponing may be appropriate. Ask about the process as well as the finished appearance; a beautiful reference image cannot answer hygiene questions.

Questions to bring to your consultation

  • Am I sharing eye cosmetics?
  • Am I following applicator and storage directions?
  • Have I reconsidered booking with active eye symptoms?

This article provides general information, not an individual diagnosis, treatment plan or procedure instructions. Discuss suitability, risks and personal care with the appropriate qualified professional.
