Manicure hygiene: questions to ask before choosing a colour
A manicure involves more than colour and shape. Consider tool preparation, skin condition and the limits of the appointment.

Ask how tools are prepared
Before starting, ask how reusable tools are cleaned and appropriately processed, and which items are single-use. A tidy-looking surface alone does not establish the whole hygiene process. Understand how materials are prepared between clients rather than asking only whether a particular device is present. Bringing personal tools does not remove the need for proper care and cleaning after use.
Consider skin integrity alongside appearance
Mention open wounds, marked redness or pain around the fingers beforehand. Bleeding and pain should not be treated as necessary parts of the appointment. Cuticles have a protective role, so question an assumption that they must be cut. Seek assessment of concerning nail changes rather than hiding them beneath polish. A useful consultation clarifies unsuitable steps as well as your preferred shape.
Questions to bring to your consultation
- Are tool processing and single-use items clear?
- Have I disclosed wounds or pain?
- Have I discussed any cutting steps I do not want?
