Nasolabial folds: what to discuss before considering filler
Consider more than the apparent depth of a fold. A consultation guide centred on facial structure, movement and personal expectations.

Avoid judging a fold from one photograph
The nasolabial area follows the line from the sides of the nose towards the mouth. Its appearance can differ at rest, while smiling and under different lighting. Note when you notice the concern before a consultation. Describe the appearance that bothers you rather than aiming to remove all evidence of facial movement. A prominent fold in a photograph does not, by itself, establish that filler is needed or that a particular amount is suitable.
Clarify softening versus complete removal
If you hope a fold will disappear completely, say so and ask whether that is realistic. Ask why a regional procedure is being proposed, what its limits are and what alternatives exist. Previous facial treatments, medical history and any permanent materials belong in that discussion. Possible improvement and risk should be considered together. Know who to contact and how a review is arranged before deciding on the basis of the fold’s appearance alone.
Questions to bring to your consultation
- Do I notice the fold at rest or mainly when smiling?
- Is my expectation of complete removal realistic?
- How do previous procedures affect the proposal?
