Introducing a new skin-care product thoughtfully

A single change is easier to observe

A popular product does not require replacing your entire routine. Identify the need you are trying to address and read the directions. Introducing several products together makes it harder to identify a possible cause of discomfort. Record the start date and what else you use. The record is not for self-diagnosis; it provides clearer information if you need a professional assessment.

A home product check does not diagnose allergy

AAD describes checking a new skin-care product on a small area before wider use. A comfortable initial check does not guarantee that no later reaction will occur. This is different from diagnostic patch testing performed by a dermatologist. Do not force continued use through a rash, swelling or persistent burning; obtain appropriate assessment. For prescribed products, consult the prescribing clinician before changing their use.

Questions to bring to your consultation

  • What need should the new product address?
  • Have I recorded directions and the start date?
  • Am I confusing a home check with an allergy guarantee?

This article provides general information, not an individual diagnosis, treatment plan or procedure instructions. Discuss suitability, risks and personal care with the appropriate qualified professional.
